How to Improve Your Web Site's Visibility

OK. Now that you have built your web site, you just can't sit back and hope that people will visit your site. You need to make sure that your site is known by most of the major search engines.

Halifax.Com does submit your site to at least 15 of the major search engines, but offers no guarantee that the search engines will add your site. It is up to you to make sure that your web site is in as many search engines as possible. This will maximize how many people can view your web site.

However, before submitting your site to the engines, you should ensure that you have added two simple lines of HTML to your Home Page. These lines are called META tags and contain information that the search engines will use to catagorize your site. In some cases, those of you who had Halifax.Com help you with your site, we already added these META tags. For example,

<TITLE>Super Duper Web Site - The Web Site for Expert Climbers</TITLE>
<META NAME="description" CONTENT="Super-Duper is the worlds premier
Rock Climbing Store.">
<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="rock climbing, shoes, carabiners, rope,
webbing, virginia, halifax">

For example, to add your site to the Infoseek search engine, visit the site and click on the Add URL link. Then, fill in the information about your web site and submit the information.

Carry out this procedure for as many other search engines as you can find. We have included below a list of several places for you to submit your web site's URL.

Now that the Search Engines know about you, make sure that you use your web site's address (URL) in any other advertising that you do. This includes the newspaper, radio, magazines, business cards, T-shirts, pamphlets, hats and any other item that the public sees. You should also include your email address in any advertising.
