The Town of South Boston has a council/manager form of government.
There are six council members and one mayor elected at large from open Town elections per Virginia State
Laws. Council elections are held every two years in May. Council members serve 4-year,
staggered terms.
The South Boston Town Council meets monthly on the second Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers on Yancey Street.
Council's two standing committees, Finance and Current Issues, meet on the last
Monday night of the month at 5:45 pm in Council Chambers on Yancey Street.
Every other month, the Town Council meets jointly with the Halifax County
Board of Supervisors and the Town of Halifax at 6:00 pm in the Bethune
Complex in Halifax.
Although the Mayor does not have an official office, he can be reached
through the Town Manager's office at 575-4200.
The Town Council appoints a "Town Manager" who is responsible for
managing the daily operations of the town government and for carrying out the policies of
Council. The remainder of the town staff can be found under Town Structure and Department
Heads.
