Carol Mathews Ray attended Mary Baldwin College and Radford University and has a degree in art Education. She taught art in the Chesterfield County school system for fifteen years and is currently teaching art in Halifax County Middle School. She also teaches adult art classes for the Parsons Bruce Art Association. She finds teaching challenging and enjoys working with students who are interested and eager to learn. Mrs. Ray helped establish an art gallery, which represented over 50 regional artists and craftsmen when she lived in Gloucester, VA prior to moving to South Boston. Her work includes pen and ink drawings of historic buildings as well as watercolors, which is her current medium. Objects and scenes that have to do with the out of doors and gardening provide the subject matter for her paintings. She particularly likes to use birdhouses, old wheelbarrows, pots, and flowers in her work. She enjoys working in watercolor because of the transparency and immediacy of the medium as well as the different effects, such as glazing, that are possible. |
