Krista Skelton
Krista’s wonderful watercolors
won ‘Best in Show’ for professional artists at the 2003 Halifax County Fair. Her work has been recently featured at the Prizery’s ‘Affair of the Arts’, Hillsborough, North Carolina’s ‘Last Friday’ art festival, and The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. Furthermore, her
paintings were exhibited in 2002 at the Lynchburg Fine Art Show and Danville
Art League Show in the Danville Museum.
Krista began working with
watercolor while studying art history at Agnes Scott College in Decatur,
Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. She has been exhibiting her work off and on
ever since. Krista comments, “Winslow
Homer, Andrew Wyeth and son Jamie Wyeth,
pierced my soul with their incredible work in this medium. I have been studying watercolor for over
twenty-five years and they move me to this day.
Color brings me great joy and I want my paintings to bring that same joy
and happiness to others.”
Krista paints in a simple style
that reflects her commitment to simplicity in all that she does. Krista adds, “It is very important for me to
let the natural light and beauty of my subjects come through the work. I’m just beginning to do that with
portraits. Recently, my primary subjects
have been flowers and natural landscapes.
I love irises and grow them in every available color. In addition, I grow a wide variety of other
flowers in my garden and paint each one in turn as the season passes.”
A tobacco barn is another recent subject for
Krista. She was raised in upstate
Michigan; and some of her earlier paintings include barns in beautiful ‘snow-scapes’ of that state’s rural country. It gave me a sense of connection with the
history of Halifax County that I also enjoy.”
Krista also paints ‘house portraits’ and other subjects on
commission.
