(See the May 2008 Prizery Art Gallery Showing - Phil and Wyatt Ramsey Fine Art) Philip William Ramsey, a Knoxville, Tennessee native, received a master's degree in Horticulture at the University of Tennessee. Since moving to Virginia, Phil has become a professional artist and is best known for his commissioned murals throughout southern Virginia and North Carolina. He claims the largest painted mural in the state of Virginia, measuring 1600 square feet. This local artist has given several talks to social clubs, interior designer workshops, and historical societies pertaining to his work in faux painting and murals. Phil currently has oil and watercolor paintings in galleries in Danville, Virginia; Clarksville, Virginia and at one time had paintings in galleries in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina. S & S Design in Danville, Virginia hosted Phil's first art show and exhibition in the spring of 2000. Phil's latest work emphasis, however, has been concentrated on painting commissioned portraits in oil and pastel. He hopes to eventually paint portraits as a full time occupation. Phil currently receives and covets critique and instruction from nationally renowned portrait artist, John de la Vega. In addition to murals and portraits, ceramic tile murals, painted furniture, floors, rugs and screens, pet portraits and house portraits can be commissioned of Phil Ramsey. Phil, his wife, Shelley, and their three sons have called South Boston home since 1986. "My art is a perception of what I see and feel. I paint what is interesting, exciting, or beautiful to me and I paint from memory or a feeling that is tucked inside. When I paint for someone else, I point something that can be shared with another person's feelings, perception or beauty. I paint what can be held or felt in common with a lot of people - a sidewalk view of an old house on a crisp fall day, and how the air smells at that very moment, the crashing sound of ocean waves and the serenity that it gives your heart, a city scene with horns blowing and the excitement of night life on the streets, or maybe the aroma of a nearby sidewalk cafe. I want people to see my work and have an understanding of what that slice of life is all about. And, if one can't hear the sound of music playing in the distance then I have failed. Of all things to paint, the one that surpasses all and transcends above every creation is a portrait - painting people. Portraiture is the most challenging and difficult art to accomplish, yet to me, is the most satisfying and touches my soul deeper than other painting endeavors. I believe all people are made in the image of God, therefore, every time I paint a portrait, I am actually painting an image of God."
