The Retreat That Rescued the American Revolution, by Larry G. Aaron. Published May 2007.

"The Crossing of the Dan was as significant to the southern campaigns as Washington's crossing of the Delaware. In fact, Greene's crossing of the Dan led more quickly to long-term victories than those at Trenton and Princeton. Greene's crossing led to Guilford Courthouse and, six months later, to Yorktown . . ."
- Dr. Lawrence E. Babits, George Washington Distinguished Professor of History, East Carolina University, North Carolina

The Halifax County Historical Society announces the future publication of . . .
An Architectural History of Halifax County, Virginia

Halifax County, formed in 1752 from Lunenburg contains a remarkable history rich in architecture and in tradition. From the Staunton River on the north to the North Carolina line on the south, Halifax County has much to offer its community. Its tobacco heritage includes the first seven National Tobacco Festivals from 1935 through 1941 and the county was once the largest tobacco market in Virginia. Textile mills, churches, and schools helped to shape the area. Several historic districts are now a part of the county with others seeking the same recognition. Small communities sprang up. Some have disappeared but others still play a major role in the county and its history.

The hardbound book will contain:
• Approximately 500 pages with illustrations.
• An overview of the county's history and architectural development, with a discussion of building forms, traditions, and styles.
• An overview of each town's history and architectural development.
• Brief histories of past and current communities.
• Descriptions and photographs of about 350 important buildings surveyed, including houses, outbuildings, schools, churches, commercial buildings, and bridges.
• Guidelines for preserving historic properties.
• End notes, bibliography, index, appendix, and glossary with illustrations.

The Halifax County Historical Society is working to fund, complete, and publish an architectural history of the county. The book's anticipated publication date is early 2007. The Society's goal is to showcase the significance and diversity of the county's history through its architecture.

Tax-deductible contributions to the publication will be recognized in the front of the book; memorials are encouraged. Categories are benefactor, patron, sponsor, and contributor. Deadline for inclusion in the book is April 2006.
